“Seasons: Calendars, Candles, and Communities”

We earthlings are caught up in an intimate and ancient dance with the sun, a dance that shaped our cultures, our religions, and our selves. Science Ambassador JD Stillwater explores this deep intimacy between astronomy and spirituality, and our annual path through the wheel of the year.

“Practicing Hope”

Joanna Macy, in her book, Active Hope, reminds us that hope “is a practice. Like tai chi or gardening, it is something we do rather than have.” How, then, might we exercise this particular muscle, when hope is hard to find? Whether you think of hope as a thing with feathers, or wild-haired, scraped-knuckled rising from the mud to have another go, let’s share our own ways of practicing, together.

A Celebration of the Season, coordinated by Jean Helz

I encourage you to describe traditions that have been especially important to you.  Although my emphasis will be primarily Christian, I hope that others will bring descriptions or readings of what the holidays mean to them. We know that early human beings had celebrations of the shortest day of the year. We will sing a lot of carols.  Please let me know of any that are especially meaningful to you. If you would like, bring some snacks that we could share after the service.
