“Epi-what? Epistemology, Misinformation, and the Current Crisis”

How do we know what is true? Epistemology asks and answers that question. Deep into the Information Age, we drink from a firehose of information, much of it false. A shared epistemology, one based on evidence, would help. America needs epistemology, whether we use that word or not.

“Who do you say I am?”

Different faith traditions emphasize different images of Jesus: healer, social reformer, and sage, among others.  This message explores these and other perspectives on the historical Jesus.

“Resurrecting Our Elders”

Earth Day and Easter are good days to think about resurrecting our elders. This
appreciation will explore the value of writing letters to the elders—dead or
alive—who have helped shape who we have become. They might be artists, teachers, coaches, political leaders, visionaries, historical figures, or the person who lived next door. They might be people we’ve never met who lived long ago and far away but to whom we can still offer tribute and gratitude.

Barbara Hurd is a widely published, award-winning author who writes mostly about the natural world. She has lived in Western Maryland for many decades.

“Who’s In Control Around Here?”

There it is, that thought, that pesky thought, “Why do bad things happen to good people?”  And there’s that other one, “Why me?”  Let’s dig in.

The Rev. Dr. Kate R. Walker, (she/her/hers) started serving the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh in August of 2021.  Previously she served the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Meadville Unitarian Universalist Church, in Meadville, Pennsylvania.  She was raised Unitarian Universalist and is a double UU preacher’s kid.  She has several academic degrees you can ask her about, but are boring to list. She lives in Pittsburgh with her husband Mark, two deeply loved Springer Spaniels, and a rescue that resemble a large fluffy clown.  She is an outdoor enthusiast, frequently found hiking, skiing, sailing, biking and staring at the sky while thinking about nothing at all.
