January 2025 Services

January 5, 10:45Rev. Terry Ellen (via Zoom) “The Breath of Life”

We all take breath for granted because we have it from birth to death, all day long. Yet almost every meditative or spiritual path for ages has focussed intensely on it. Maybe they know something that we forgot. Let’s consider.

January 12, 10:45 – Rev. Paul Britner “Advancing Justice”

Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois strongly disagreed on how African Americans should confront Jim Crow, just as groups today struggle with competing strategies to advance their agendas. This message draws on past social movements to inform our response to current challenges. After the service, Paul will facilitate a discussion on how we might use information from the sermon to advance current social justice issues.

January 19, 10:45 – Rev. Martha Macgill “Community Cafe is Up and Running!”

Maryland’s first pay-as-you-are-able restaurant is now open on Sundays from 11-2 for lunch at 127 N. Centre Street, Cumberland.  UUFGC has been a faithful supporter of the Cafe since its conceptual beginnings in 2019. The Rev Martha Macgill, Chair of the Cafe board, will join UUFGC for worship and share an update on the Cafe since opening including how to volunteer and more. Rev Martha is the retired Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Cumberland and is now working on a variety of community projects including the Community Cafe, Wills Creek Museum and an In-Patient Hospice House. (This service was originally scheduled for December 15th but rescheduled due to a weather cancellation.)

January 26, 10:45 – “My Spiritual Journey”

We each have a story of our spiritual journey which shapes who we are and how we relate to the larger world of which we are a part. Join us as three members of the congregation share the stories of the paths their journeys have taken.
