October 2024 Services

October 6, 10:45: “Soap Box Sunday”

What are you passionate about? Is there a cause or interest that is close to your heart? Something you commit your time and energy to that you would like to expound on? Multiple participants will have an opportunity to share (for up to 5 minutes) on their topic of choice. It’s a great chance to introduce others to something important to you, and for us to learn more about each other.

October 13, 10:45: Rev. Paul Britner –   “To be Purged with Blood”

Unitarians had very mixed views of John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, which still today may inform our perspectives on civil disobedience and social action. There will be a program after our social time to further explore this topic.

October 20, 10:45: Rev. Lora Powell-Haney – “Listening to Life in the Dark Half of the Year”

In this season of talking (shouting?) voices everywhere, as we near a crucial election in this country, when all around us is vitriol and meanness, we’ll gather in community spiritual practice for deep listening. The season turns toward the dark half of the year, when we are called to stillness, contemplation, and rest. How might we practice a “both/and” way of being in the world right now: deep listening to our inner voices, deep listening to voices different from ours, deep listening to the velvet dark? Lora Powell-Haney (she/her), MDiv, currently serves as interim Director of Family Ministry at Mount Vernon Unitarian Church.

October 27: JD Stillwater – “Awetheism Part 3 – The Uses of Awe in Teaching and War”

In this explosive service, JD explores how awe can be manipulated for better and worse, in politics, education, and war. We will probe the boundary between awe and horror, and consider things that snap, crackle, pop, and echo through culverts, saxophones, and history.
